Making Assessment and Classroom Management Fun!

In this interactive session I would like to share with teachers two strategies that I use in my class that make assessment and classroom management fun and valuable for both the students and teacher.

This session will involve an introduction to and practice with a technology resource that gives quick and valuable feedback on assessments that are used in class (ex. warm ups, formative assessments or in lecture check-ins) while engaging students through a fun, interactive platform.

I will also introduce teachers to a management strategy that I have developed over the course of this year that gives students a voice in the expectations of the classroom and shifts the responsibility of monitoring student behavior to the students while keeping the classroom atmosphere fun and engaging.

Differentiating Instruction and ELL Learners

The focus of this session is for teachers to gain a better understanding of language as a resource, understand the need to address ELL needs, and walk away with strategies to start implementing to more effectively meet the needs of ELL students.

Northshore School District has doubled their ELL student population and will only continue to have a growing need to meet the needs of diverse learners. This workshop will provide opportunities for teachers to learn about language aquisition and resources for differentiation. In addition to this teachers will be provided an opportunity to collaborate with their peers to share instructional strategies as well as take time to apply strategies to lessons that they would like to enhance to meet the needs of ELL students.

The session will start with a brief self-assessment where teachers will learn about language acquisition theory and research. This quiz will help set a common research basis to move forward in conversation. From there the first hour will be devoted to an interactive poster session where teachers share their top concerns for working with and addressing the needs of ELL students. Together teachers will brainstorm and share effective strategies to use. As the facilitator, Kirsten will also provide resources and strategies.

The second hour will be a time for teachers to specifically work on one or more lessons that they would like to differentiate. Possible areas of focus would be using English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPs) to differentiate assessment practices, creating culturally responsive lessons, scaffolding assignments and assessments, and finding and utilizing resources.

Teachers can attend one or both hours of this session. For example, teachers aren't required to attend the first hour to benefit from the 2nd hour (though it would be helpful to attend both).

Close Reading, Highlighting, and Movement

Motivating adolescents and supporting them as they become proficient readers is a task requiring multiple teaching strategies. In this interactive session, participants will engage in physical movement activities and work in collaborative groups to explore close reading strategies they can use when teaching reading to students. Participants will receive several strategies they can immediately take back to their classrooms to use and share with their colleagues. This workshop has been presented at the Kappa Delta Pi Convocation, the AMLE Conference, and ASCD.

Student Generated Experiments: The BIRP and PIRP

In 10th grade biology and 11/12th grade physics, students are given the opportunity to experience science by generating their own science experiments. This semester long project is scaffolded to allow students to generate their own topics, questions, and procedures. It also allows them to collect their own data, appropriately analyze it and draw conclusions. They also receive peer feedback along the way. Come and learn how we organize this into our classes!

Within the Teaching Up philosophy, teacher provide "all students, regardless of the backgrounds and starting points" the opportunity to receive educational experiences that "stimulate and stretch the" (Tomlinson & Javius, 2012).

The presenters will highlight what it means to develop a growth mind-set, to appreciate the cultural backgrounds of students, to hold high expectation for students, to provide equitable instruction, and to differentiate according to student needs. This workshop will be highly interactive with several differentiation strategies modeled and practiced throughout the delivery and understanding of the material.

The morning session will serve as an introduction to key principles of Teaching Up. The afternoon will encompass specific strategies teachers can use in all classrooms, followed by time for teachers to work individually or in teams to apply some of the Teaching Up principles to a specific lesson or unit.

This workshop will be offered twice during the Secondary Summer Institute. You may only take it once for clock hours and pay.

Beyond Relevance and Real-World: Stronger Strategies for Engaging Students in CCSS-M (#5838)

We try to engage students in difficult mathematics through real world examples, relevance, and examples of math in the world of jobs. These often fail us, leaving students even more disengaged than they were originally.

This class is designed for all teachers who are interested in understanding Sensory Processing Disorders and how this relates to students in the classroom, both general education as well as special education. Secondary Focus.

Have you ever wondered what to do with your children who wiggle and can't attend, or the child who comes in from recess wet, sandy and unaware? What about the "checked-out" middle schooler with the hoodie up and ear buds in? If these students seem hard to reach for you, then this is the class for you. We will cover what the terms sensory processing and sensory differences mean, and how they impact the children in our classrooms and their learning. This class contains practical classroom application of sensory processing ideas, measures to identify children who are struggling to focus due to sensory differences and suggestions to help them. The information is applicable for grades K-12.
