Motivating adolescents and supporting them as they become proficient readers is a task requiring multiple teaching strategies. In this interactive session, participants will engage in physical movement activities and work in collaborative groups to explore close reading strategies they can use when teaching reading to students. Participants will receive several strategies they can immediately take back to their classrooms to use and share with their colleagues. This workshop has been presented at the Kappa Delta Pi Convocation, the AMLE Conference, and ASCD.

We will use the ideas of Josef Albers to look at color and different phenomena behind color.
What we see is often considered reality. Using the ideas of Albers and the different concepts behind color theory we will discover that we don't actually pay attention to everything we think we see.
As a visual artist, it is important to know how people see. This lesson helps us understand the process of seeing.

My students and I completed a large, outdoor, anamorphic chalk drawing. I'll share the techniques we used to create it and I will talk about the different learning involved.
It was an epic adventure that led to excellent team building with my students.

The NGSS calls for students to be able to design and refine models. Come and find out a way to do this via "energy theaters". Learn how to use them to teach students about the flow of various kinds of energy in physics, chemistry and biology.
This session is part of the New Professionals’ Academy for Secondary teachers, a series of required classes for first year teachers [grades 7 – 12] and also open to new to NSD teachers. This session is designed to support teachers as they transition through the first year of professional practice, to reinforce the TPEP work of the building principal and district leadership and to maintain highly skilled professionals for the Northshore School District.
Attendance at this session is by invitation only. This is required for all first year teachers and is recommended for all new hires.
Secondary Math Teachers will design lessons and tasks that incorporate strategies presented by Dan Meyer and in Principles To Actions. This session is OPTIONAL for secondary math teachers; register for PD Place session #6030. Clock hours and pay are available.
